Before You Begin

Cats spend considerable time caring for their coats, yet some need help with long hair, seasonal shedding or reduced mobility. Successful home brushing does not depend on force or a long session. The aim is to preserve your cat's choice, remove loose hair and spot tangles before they tighten. Start with what your cat can accept today.

02

Make the setting comfortable

Choose a quiet moment after rest and place the brush nearby so your cat can inspect it. Begin with a familiar stroke, then add one pass with a soft tool. Do not block the exit if your cat wants to leave. Praise or offer a suitable treat and finish after a few calm strokes. A brief repeat on another day builds a better routine than trying to complete the whole coat now.

03

Match the coat length

A short-haired cat usually needs less help: a soft brush or grooming mitt can remove loose hair in a short weekly session. Check a long coat more often behind the ears, under the legs, along the belly and around the hind legs. A wide-toothed comb helps you work gradually in the direction of hair growth. Do not brush only the visible surface; a mat can form near the skin while the top looks smooth.

04

Read your cat's response

A fast-moving tail, ears held back, growling or an attempt to leave means it is time to stop. Do not restrain a cat to finish the other side. If ten seconds is all your cat accepts today, that is the session length for now. Next time, begin in a comfortable area and progress slowly. After a difficult experience, discuss a gentle familiarisation plan with a qualified professional.

05

Mats and changes that need help

Never cut a mat close to the skin with scissors: thin cat skin can be drawn into the fur. If a cat stops grooming, repeatedly focuses on one patch, shows pain or has a wound, contact a veterinarian. A groomer can help with tangled coat and safe brushing technique once any medical concern has been assessed.
